Sometimes the fabric decides what it wants to become.
For this week's Make It Monday, we pulled out this wonderful vintage hunting fabric covered in old outdoor scenes featuring ducks, hunting dogs, birds and classic sporting imagery.
It had so much personality that we didn't want to chop it into little pieces. A Junior Groundcloth gave us the chance to keep those big illustrations intact and put the fabric back to work.
We paired it with brown waxed canvas, added four corner grommets, and ended up with a compact Groundcloth that feels like it could have been sitting beside an old canvas tent 50 years ago.
Built for Everyday Adventures
At approximately 24" × 21", our Junior Groundcloth is small enough to tuck into your gear but large enough to come in handy constantly.
Use it as a:
- Sit pad around camp
- Dry place to kneel
- Clean surface for lunch
- Gear mat
- Work surface in the woods
- Barrier between your belongings and wet or dirty ground
Flip the waxed canvas side toward the ground when you want the more weather resistant surface underneath.

Four corner grommets make it easy to stake down or hang when needed.

Giving Old Fabric Another Adventure
This is one of the reasons we love working with vintage textiles.
That hunting fabric could have stayed folded away somewhere for another few decades. Instead, it's headed back outside.
We don't know exactly where this fabric has been or what it was originally intended to become, but now it gets another chapter as a useful piece of outdoor gear.
And because we're working with vintage material, pattern placement will vary if we make more than one. Each section of this big print tells a slightly different story.
Built to Age Beautifully
The brown waxed canvas will crease, scratch, soften and develop a patina as it's used. That's exactly what it's supposed to do.
Add that to an already vintage hunting print and this is one of those pieces we think will look even better after it's collected a few adventures of its own.
