The Power of Networking ... Around a Campfire

When we first started our business, I thought making a great product would be enough. And in some ways, it was—we did grow, slowly but steadily. But it wasn’t the kind of growth I dreamed of for our family company.

After years of creeping along, I realized something had to change. So, I stepped out of my comfort zone and started networking.

At first, I dipped my toes in with local events. We joined a group that focused on outdoor businesses, and that was a lot of fun. We made a few local connections. Then I tried attending chamber of commerce meetings. But as a gear maker, it was hard to find common ground in a room full of service-based businesses. That’s when I learned something important—my niche was unique, and that was okay. The real value was in showing up and putting myself out there.

Then COVID hit, and the local outdoor group went in a different direction. Things quieted down.

Until one day, I got a message from a friend we had met at a show. He invited us to camp in the woods in Georgia with a bunch of strangers—other outdoor businesses, buyers, writers, and content creators. It sounded wild. And it sounded like fun. So we said yes.

We flew 2,200 miles—and it turned out to be life-changing.

That weekend, we found our people. We made lasting connections, gained new buyers, got featured in articles, and formed collaborations that helped us grow. More than that, we were surrounded by a business culture built on community, not competition. It was all about lifting each other up.

We finally landed in a space that felt like home. Being around so many supportive, like-minded people was incredibly powerful. When you're surrounded by folks who understand your struggles and want to see you succeed—it changes everything.

That event became a turning point for our company. Eventually, I was asked to join their Campfire Co-op board and help carry that mission forward. Now, I get to help others make those same connections, share their stories, and find their people.

I’m so grateful to be part of a community where success is shared, not hoarded—and where there's always room at the table for one more.
