Not Your Typical Outdoor Podcast (And That’s the Point)
Raise the Flag Podcast: How I Ended Up Around This Campfire
The Raise the Flag Podcast is a weekly outdoor and small business podcast where we have real, unscripted conversations about life, gear, and the people behind it.
Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, a woman and her child started a podcast.
They read the headlines and gave their take from a mom and preteen point of view. It was fun. It was silly. And honestly, it was a great way to realize just how ridiculous the world can be.
But then life got busy. Too busy for a podcast. And just like that, the adventure ended.
The woman still wanted to podcast, though. She just didn’t have the time or energy to carry it on alone. Years passed. Her business grew. She tried to convince other people to start a podcast with her, but no one wanted to commit to showing up every week. So again, the idea quietly drifted off to the side.
Eventually, she decided to try being a guest instead. And that started to happen.
One day, she was invited onto the Raise the Flag Podcast.
It was a fun conversation with three guys in the outdoor space, and somewhere along the way, she even ended up designing a product they had been talking about. Then, like so many things, life sped up again. She got busy. The podcast idea faded… again.
But the pull never really went away.
She still wanted to talk with people. She still wanted to share her journey. She still wanted to sit down, have real conversations, and maybe make someone laugh along the way.
And then one day, she got invited to cohost a podcast.
All she had to do was show up once a week, talk with interesting people, and be herself.
You know who that woman was?
Yeah… that was me.
I’m now a permanent cohost of the Raise the Flag Podcast, and it has been an absolute blast ever since.
Meet the Campfire Crew
The show works because of the people around the “campfire.”
Nicholas is an outdoor writer and Associate Editor at RECOIL Offgrid, and he’s the one keeping this whole thing running. He handles the recording, editing, and posting, which is no small task. He’s got a background in environmental and biological sciences, a great family, and a steady, thoughtful way of looking at the world. He brings grounded conversation, curiosity, and just enough humor to keep things interesting.
Tom (Nuge) from Knives by Nuge is our resident knife maker and straight shooter. With a background in public service, he brings a practical, honest perspective to everything we talk about. He’s always working to improve his craft, his business, and himself—and he’s not afraid to say what’s actually hard about all of it. There’s a little bit of grumpy in there, but it’s the kind that keeps things real.
And then there’s me.
I’m the terminal optimist. The mom. The small business owner. The creative brain behind PNWBUSHCRAFT.
I bring the laughter, the curiosity, and the perspective of a woman building a business in the outdoor industry. I care a lot about people, about community, and about helping others grow and that shows up in every conversation we have.

What the Raise the Flag Podcast Is Really About
We’re not your typical outdoor podcast.
There’s no script. No polished, perfect production. No pretending we have it all figured out.
It’s more like sitting around a campfire with friends and talking about business, life, the outdoors, and everything in between. Sometimes we bring on guests from the outdoor industry, small business world, or creative space. Sometimes it’s just us figuring things out in real time.
We talk about:
- Building a small business (the good, the hard, and the messy)
- Life in and around the outdoor community
- Creativity, burnout, and starting over
- Real conversations with interesting people
- And whatever else comes up when you put three opinionated humans in a room
Some episodes are thoughtful. Some are ridiculous. Most are a mix of both with a few swear words thrown in.
Why It Matters (At Least to Me)
For me, this podcast scratches an itch I’ve had for years.
It’s a place to connect. To have conversations that aren’t rushed. To meet people I wouldn’t normally cross paths with. And to share a little bit of the journey behind running a small business and living this kind of life.
It’s also just… fun.
And honestly, that matters more than people give it credit for.
