Meet Mark "Merriwether" Vorderbruggen: Foraging Expert, Modern Medicine Man, and All-Around Great Person
When you first meet Mark "Merriwether" Vorderbruggen, Ph.D., you're struck by his presence. He's a big gentleman with a generous smile and kind eyes that immediately put you at ease. But don't let his gentle demeanor fool you – this guy is a powerhouse of knowledge when it comes to foraging and medicinal plants.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mark in person at the Georgia Fall Gathering in 2022, and let me tell you, it was an experience I won't forget. His enthusiasm for plants and nature is infectious, and his unique ability to blend scientific knowledge with practical foraging skills is truly impressive.
From Minnesota Woods to Texas Fields
Mark's journey is as fascinating as the plants he studies. Growing up in the wilds of Minnesota, he was surrounded by nature from an early age. His parents and grandparents were his first teachers, showing him how to use the wild foods and medicinal plants found in the local woods, fields, and lakes. This early exposure laid the foundation for his lifelong passion.
But Mark didn't just stick to traditional knowledge. He dove headfirst into the world of science, earning a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry. Now, you might think that's a far cry from foraging, but in Mark's world, it all connects. He brings this scientific rigor to his understanding of plants, making him a unique voice in the foraging community.
The Birth of "Merriwether"
Somewhere along the way, Mark picked up the nickname "Merriwether," a nod to Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It's a fitting moniker for someone who spends so much time exploring and documenting the natural world. And let me tell you, Mark wears it well.
In 2008, Mark started a website called Foraging Texas, which quickly became a go-to resource for anyone interested in wild edible and medicinal plants. But he didn't stop there. Mark has written books, taught countless classes, and even hosts his own internet show, "Merriwether's World!" His ability to make learning about plants fun and interesting is truly a gift.
More Than Just Plants
What really sets Mark apart is his approach to teaching. He's not just rattling off plant names and uses – he's sharing a way of life. Mark sees himself as a modern medicine man, someone who cares about the physical, mental, and even spiritual health of his community.
And let me tell you, he practices what he preaches. I've personally tried his "Brain Pill" to stay focused and on task, and I can attest to its effectiveness. It's just one example of how Mark brings ancient plant wisdom into our modern lives.
A Friend and a Teacher
One of the things I love most about Mark is his sense of humor. He has this knack for making learning about plants not just informative, but downright entertaining. Whether he's leading a foraging walkabout or explaining the medicinal properties of a common weed, Mark always finds a way to keep things light and fun.
In 2020, Mark took a big leap and became the medicine man for Medicine Man Plant Co. It's amazing to see how he's bringing his vast knowledge of plants to a wider audience through this venture.
